I just want to post a quick line recommending Dioniso Aguado's guitar method! I've been working through it for a short while now and have looked through the whole thing, it covers so much and i think that anyone seriously interested in becoming a good player should use it.. best thing is you can get it free from Eythorsson's gutiar site. (http://www.eythorsson.com) please if anyone else has experience with it post your comments! ciao Aguado wrote some of the sweetest guitar music that I have ever heard, but I am not very sure about his guitar method. It seems that Aguado's is more demanding on early students than other methods. On top of that he seems to go to higher positions, uses ornamentations and bars very early on in his method. Carcassi is more methodical and progressive; Julio Sagreras' Method is very interesting, I think it is based on Tarrega's method. Why? I am still trying to get a grasp on the best way of taking advantage of the various studies out there. Studies by 19th century composers like Sor and Aguado and Carcassi are bedrock for anyone trying to learn the classical guitar. But if you're trying to teach yourself from the old method books you should be VERY careful. Be sure to apply modern technique when playing the exercises and studies. The guitar has changed so much in the last 100+ years (it's much bigger, for one thing). A lot of the physical technique taught in those old methods is no longer useful, and might even be harmful. The studies themselves, however, still cover all of the basics -- arpegios, scales, barres, positions, stretches, shifts up and down the neck... That's why they're still so essential. But make sure you are learning your physical technique (hand position, stroke, posture, etc.) from a modern method book. And a good teacher is always helpful!
